In Shadows 

I've captured unicorns in flight
Through twilights purple skies
Danced with Aphrodite as 
I gazed into her eyes

I've been intrigued by whispering angels
Frozen by the breath of the Divine
Made love atop soft silver clouds 
Built castles from the sands of time

In a breath I've taken in the 
Scent of all that perfumes Eden
Bathed in glistening moonlight
Transformed rainbows into seasons

Mythic journeys through the heavens
Have never taken me as high 
As the magic of her presence or the
Sparkle in her eyes
 
She is my goddess of love and beauty
She is my Lord Divine
Enchanting as the blackest rose
Yet radiant as sunshine

She has the smile of an angel
A butterflys gentle touch
Ti's she who mystifies my dreams
I've come to love so much

I find myself returning to the  
Streams of liquid light
Condemned to suffer once again
Amidst that ghostly winter night

Forbidden love concealed in shadows
Haunting secrets unrevealed 
Despair and sorrow fill my eyes for
She knows not how I feel.

Dennis Vincent Brutus (born November 28, 1924, Salisbury, Rhodesia) is a South African poet. A graduate of the University of Fort Hare and the University of the Witwatersrand, Brutus was formerly on the faculty of the University of Denver and Northwestern University. Dennis Brutus was an activist against the apartheid government of South Africa in the 1960s. He worked to get South Africa suspended from the Olympics; this eventually lead to the country's expulsion from the games in 1970. He joined the Anti-Coloured Affairs Department organisation (Anti-CAD), a group that organised against the Coloured Affairs Department which was an attempt by the government to institutionalise divisions between blacks and coloureds. The Anti-CAD was affiliated to the Trotskyist Fourth International in South Africa. I You used to be able to drive (though I don't) across the wide, pool-sheeted pasture below the house to the hot, empty beach and park in the starved shade of the acacias that print those tiny yellow flowers (blank, printless beaches are part of my trade); then there were men with tapes and theodolites who measured the wild, uneven ground. I watched the doomed acres where yet another luxury hotel will be built with ordinary people fenced out. The new makers of our history profit without guilt and are, in fact, prophets of a policy that will make the island a mall, and the breakers grin like waiters, like taxi drivers, these new plantations by the sea; a slavery without chains, with no blood spilt� just chain-link fences and signs, the new degradations.
